Practical techniques for spurring innovation among individuals and groups tend to focus mainly on internalized mental operations. But we have another resource for boosting idea flow that is often overlooked but no less powerful: physical space. In fact, as science has shown, our material surroundings have an enormous impact on our ability to solve problems, generate insight, and develop breakthrough products and services, often without our being aware of it. Not coincidentally, these same environmental cues have been found to boost personal health and happiness as well. My personal goal is therefore to help others learn how space affects our mental and physical states, and how to use that knowledge to shape the physical world in ways that will improve their daily lives.
